Thesis Title
Biological monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in New Zealand

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals released to the environment from human industrial and agricultural activities. POPs are known to accumulate in humans and wildlife around the world, and the majority are banned in New Zealand. In this research, Mr Coakley assessed current concentrations of POPs in a representative sample of adult New Zealanders. He found that concentrations of historical POPs in adult New Zealanders have decreased over the past 15 years. Compared to the rest of the world, New Zealanders have low body burdens of most POPs, with some exceptions. Age and sex are the primary factors that are associated with POPs body burdens. Jonathan’s research provides important information for evaluating historic and contemporary exposure to this group of toxic chemicals.
