A Massey University staff member has taken out the top spot in her division at the Cigna Wellington Round the Bays running event, held last weekend.

School of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition junior research officer Mellisa Black was the first to cross the line in the women’s 20 to 29 years division of the half marathon, and the second women overall, in just under one hour and 28 minutes.

She was running as part of Massey University’s team that comprised 22 students and staff in total. Other colleagues pounding the pavement alongside her included Student Life Services team leader James Colling, Student Services associate director Amy Heise, Centre for Public Health Research senior researcher Caroline Fyfe, Centre for Defence and Security Studies tutor Nicola MacAulay and public relations director Annalie Brown.

Wellington campus recreation and sport manager David Driscole, who coordinated the team, says participation in the event supports the University’s new strategy aspiration to maximise staff engagement and wellness.

“These events in Wellington are so important to us. While we aspire to have a recreation centre on campus, in its absence, having opportunities for students and staff to connect, participate and celebrate sporting success is essential to growing our campus community.”

Staff interested in future sport and recreation events are encouraged to like and follow the sport and recreation Facebook page. If staff have any suggestions for events they would like to be supported by the University they should contact David Driscole.
