As part of the UN International Year of Indigenous Languages, Professor Huia Jahnke of Te Pūtahi-a-Toi, School of Māori Knowledge,  will be presenting a global webinar for the UNITWIN/UNESCO AND UArctic TN Teacher Education networks.

Professor Jahnke will speak on “Sustaining an endangered language through initial teacher education. The Māori language experience in New Zealand”.

She says "This topic is based on my experiences developing and providing two total immersion Māori ITE programmes at undergraduate and post graduate levels, for teaching kura kaupapa Māori in partnership withTe Rūnanganui o Ngā Kura kaupapa Māori the national kura kaupapa Māori governance organisation.

Te Aho Tātairangi is a unique programme, the only one of its kind in NZ and where our graduates are contributing to mitigating the serious decline in teacher supply for the kura kaupapa Māori sector."

Professor Jahnke will be joined in the seminar by her colleague Mari Ropata Te Hei, coordinator of the Te Aho Tātairangi and Te Aho Paerewa programmes and post graduate students from the course.

The UNITWIN/UNESCO Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity in Education, involves 16 Universties around the world including Massey University.

The webinar will be held on Monday, April 15, 2019, at 6pm and will be recorded and published afterwards.
