Massey climbs more than 50 places in latest QS World University Rankings

Wednesday 28 June 2023

The university has climbed in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, up 53 positions compared to last year.

The university has also done well in the three new indicators introduced this year.

The latest results see Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University ranked 239th equal in the world and third in Aotearoa New Zealand, up from 292nd and fifth respectively. The university’s academic reputation has also climbed, to now be sitting at 286th in the world. This is the fifth consecutive year that Massey has been ranked in the top 300 for both the overall and academic reputation rankings.

The university has done well in the three new indicators introduced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) this year. For sustainability, the university is ranked 58th equal which is pleasing to see given the increased academic offerings in sustainability.

Massey launched Australasia’s first Master of Sustainable Development Goals in 2020 and will be launching a new specialisation in climate action in 2024.

This year, the university became an Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS) Green Impact member, with staff across all three campuses taking part. Green Impact is a change and learning programme designed for university staff and students to help tackle everyday sustainability issues.

Massey was ranked first in New Zealand and 215th globally for the new international research network indicator. This highlights the university's strong connections with international collaborators. The university also received a ranking of 157th in the world for graduate employment outcomes.

Provost Professor Giselle Byrnes says Massey has performed extremely well against the three new indicators.

“The focus of these on sustainability, employment outcomes and international research collaborations strongly aligns with our university strategy and our natural strengths as a globally connected, research-intensive university.’

For this ranking round, QS considered 2963 universities, which was 501 more than last year. Indicators assessed included academic and employer reputation, citations, international faculty and students, and the three new indicators - sustainability, international research network and employment outcomes.

More than 17.5 million publications, 141.6 million citations and 2.7 million academic and employer nominations and were assessed for the ranking.
